The year 2022 has been an exciting one for movie enthusiasts. Enola Holmes 2 transported us back to Victorian London, Turning Red had us explore growing pains and family dynamics, Bones and All served us romance and gore, and Elvis let us experience a piece of music history. There is no doubt that next year’s movies will be just as thrilling. 2023 has many great films in store for us. Check the list below to read about 8 anticipated movies you should watch in 2023!
1. Wonka
- Directed by: Paul King
- Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Olivia Coleman, Sally Hawkins
This highly anticipated musical film is guaranteed to be a sweet treat for children and adults alike. Wonka’s plot follows a young Willy Wonka (portrayed by Timothée Chalamet), before he grows into the legendary chocolatier depicted in Roald Dahl’s 1964 children’s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The film’s musical numbers and dance performances are sure to touch hearts, and create a joyous experience for the whole family.
Wonka is set to be released in theaters on December 15, 2023.
2. Barbie

- Starring: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell
Greta Gerwig, the creative genius behind films such as Lady Bird and Little Women (2019) is at it again! This time with a movie about, what is arguably the most well-known toy around the world, the Barbie. Barbie is an upcoming romantic comedy movie centered around the eponymous doll and her love interest, Ken. The movie boasts a star-studded cast. Margot Robbie will take on the lead-role of Barbie, while Ryan Gosling will portray Ken. Among others, further big names include America Ferrera, Will Ferrel, Emma Mackey and Issa Rae.
Barbie is scheduled to be released on July 21, 2023.
3. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

- Starring: Hunter Schafer, Viola Davis, Peter Dinklage
With over US$2.97 billion in global sales, The Hunger Games is one of the most successful franchises of all time. The last Hunger Games movie was made over 5 years ago, but fans who wanted more have something to be excited about. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will bring back the dystopian world of Panem in this standalone prequel. The plot is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, and follows a young Coriolanous Snow (played by Tom Blyth), before he became the president of Panem. He, along with 23 other students, is chosen to be a mentor for the impoverished District 12, for the Tenth Hunger Games. The cast includes Hunter Schafer, Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes comes to cinemas on November 17, 2023.
4. Dune: Part Two
Directed by: Denis Villeneuve
Starring: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Austin Butler
After its first successful launch in 2021, the Dune franchise is back for a second installment. In Dune: Part Two, Paul Atreidis (played by Timothée Chalamet) joins forces with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen in an effort to exact revenge on his conspirators, who destroyed his family. Florence Pugh will join the cast as Princess Irulan, and Austin Butler slips into the role of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Famous composer Hans Zimmer worked on the score for Dune: Part Two.
Dune: Part Two will be released on film on November 3, 2023.
5. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

- Starring: Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black
The trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie just launched, and fans of the beloved Super Mario Bros games are in awe. Nintendo has teamed up with Illumination Studios to bring the Super Mario Bros universe to life, in this animated film. The movie plot revolves around plumber Mario and his brother Luigi as they set out on a quest through an underground labyrinth, to rescue Princess Peach, who has been kidnapped by Bowser. The voice actors for the movie include, Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser.
Watch it in theaters on April 7, 2023.
6. John Wick: Chapter 4

- Starring: Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård
Attention, John Wick fans! John Wick will be back in 2023 and ready to take down key players in the criminal underworld. Keanu Reeves reprises his title role of the legendary hit man John Wick, who uncovers a path to destroying The High Table. Rina Sawayama, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Shamier Anderson and Hiroyuki Sanada are new additions to the casting. With a plot that promises to be just as action-packed, violent and explosive as its predecessors, John Wick: Chapter 4 has the potential to be another hit.
John Wick: Chapter 4 will be released on March 24, 2023.
7. The Little Mermaid

- Starring: Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy
In 2023 Disney graces us with yet another live-action remake. This time, it’s their 1989 classic The Little Mermaid. 2023’s The Little Mermaid tells the story of the mermaid Ariel, who longs to be part of the world of humans. She visits the surface and falls for Prince Eric, then makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula to explore life on land further. Halle Bailey stars as Ariel in this reimagining. Jonah Hauer-King takes on the role of Prince Eric, Ursula will be played by Melissa McCarthy. The movie will feature songs from the original animated Disney film, with the addition of four new musical numbers. The Little Mermaid will appeal to new audiences through updated plot lines, while also bringing back memories for those who grew up watching Disney films.
The Little Mermaid comes out on May 26, 2023.
8. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

- Starring: Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Harrison Ford reprises one of his most famous roles in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. In this highly anticipated 5th installment of Indiana Jones, we follow the archaeologist Jones as he embarks on an adventure, joined by his goddaughter (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge) as a travel companion. The film is directed by renowned filmmaker James Mangold, known for movies such as Wolverine and Walk The Line.
