The year 2022 has been an exci­ting one for movie enthu­si­asts. Eno­la Hol­mes 2 trans­por­ted us back to Vic­to­ri­an Lon­don, Tur­ning Red had us explo­re gro­wing pains and fami­ly dyna­mics, Bones and All ser­ved us romance and gore, and Elvis let us expe­ri­ence a pie­ce of music histo­ry. The­re is no doubt that next year’s movies will be just as thril­ling. 2023 has many gre­at films in store for us. Check the list below to read about 8 anti­ci­pa­ted movies you should watch in 2023!

1. Wonka

This high­ly anti­ci­pa­ted musi­cal film is gua­ran­te­ed to be a sweet tre­at for child­ren and adults ali­ke. Wonka’s plot fol­lows a young Wil­ly Won­ka (por­tray­ed by Timo­thée Cha­la­met), befo­re he grows into the legen­da­ry cho­co­la­tier depic­ted in Roald Dahl’s 1964 children’s novel, Char­lie and the Cho­co­la­te Fac­to­ry. The film’s musi­cal num­bers and dance per­for­man­ces are sure to touch hearts, and crea­te a joy­ous expe­ri­ence for the who­le family.

Won­ka is set to be released in thea­ters on Decem­ber 15, 2023.

2. Barbie

Gre­ta Ger­wig, the crea­ti­ve geni­us behind films such as Lady Bird and Litt­le Women (2019) is at it again! This time with a movie about, what is argu­ab­ly the most well-known toy around the world, the Bar­bie. Bar­bie is an upco­m­ing roman­tic come­dy movie cen­te­red around the epony­mous doll and her love inte­rest, Ken. The movie boasts a star-stud­ded cast. Mar­got Rob­bie will take on the lead-role of Bar­bie, while Ryan Gos­ling will por­tray Ken. Among others, fur­ther big names inclu­de Ame­ri­ca Fer­re­ra, Will Fer­rel, Emma Mackey and Issa Rae.

Bar­bie is sche­du­led to be released on July 21, 2023.

3. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

With over US$2.97 bil­li­on in glo­bal sales, The Hun­ger Games is one of the most suc­cess­ful fran­chi­ses of all time. The last Hun­ger Games movie was made over 5 years ago, but fans who wan­ted more have some­thing to be exci­ted about. The Hun­ger Games: The Bal­lad of Song­birds and Sna­kes will bring back the dys­to­pian world of Panem in this stan­da­lo­ne pre­quel. The plot is based on the novel of the same name by Suzan­ne Col­lins, and fol­lows a young Corio­l­a­nous Snow (play­ed by Tom Bly­th), befo­re he beca­me the pre­si­dent of Panem. He, along with 23 other stu­dents, is cho­sen to be a men­tor for the impo­ve­ris­hed District 12, for the Tenth Hun­ger Games. The cast inclu­des Hun­ter Scha­fer, Vio­la Davis and Peter Dinklage.

The Hun­ger Games: The Bal­lad of Song­birds and Sna­kes comes to cine­mas on Novem­ber 17, 2023.

4. Dune: Part Two

Star­ring: Timo­thée Cha­la­met, Zen­da­ya, Flo­rence Pugh, Aus­tin Butler

After its first suc­cess­ful launch in 2021, the Dune fran­chise is back for a second install­ment. In Dune: Part Two, Paul Atrei­dis (play­ed by Timo­thée Cha­la­met) joins for­ces with Cha­ni (Zen­da­ya) and the Fre­men in an effort to exact reven­ge on his con­spi­ra­tors, who des­troy­ed his fami­ly. Flo­rence Pugh will join the cast as Princess Iru­lan, and Aus­tin But­ler slips into the role of Feyd-Rau­tha Har­kon­nen. Famous com­po­ser Hans Zim­mer worked on the score for Dune: Part Two.

Dune: Part Two will be released on film on Novem­ber 3, 2023.

5. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The trai­ler for The Super Mario Bros. Movie just laun­ched, and fans of the beloved Super Mario Bros games are in awe. Nin­ten­do has tea­med up with Illu­mi­na­ti­on Stu­di­os to bring the Super Mario Bros uni­ver­se to life, in this ani­ma­ted film. The movie plot revol­ves around plum­ber Mario and his bro­ther Lui­gi as they set out on a quest through an under­ground laby­rinth, to res­cue Princess Peach, who has been kid­nap­ped by Bow­ser. The voice actors for the movie inclu­de, Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Tay­lor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser.

6. John Wick: Chapter 4

Atten­ti­on, John Wick fans! John Wick will be back in 2023 and rea­dy to take down key play­ers in the cri­mi­nal under­world. Kea­nu Ree­ves repri­ses his tit­le role of the legen­da­ry hit man John Wick, who unco­vers a path to des­troy­ing The High Table. Rina Sawa­ya­ma, Don­nie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Shamier Ander­son and Hiroyu­ki Sana­da are new addi­ti­ons to the cas­ting. With a plot that pro­mi­ses to be just as action-packed, vio­lent and explo­si­ve as its pre­de­ces­sors, John Wick: Chap­ter 4 has the poten­ti­al to be ano­t­her hit.

John Wick: Chap­ter 4 will be released on March 24, 2023.

7. The Little Mermaid

In 2023 Dis­ney graces us with yet ano­t­her live-action remake. This time, it’s their 1989 clas­sic The Litt­le Mer­maid. 2023’s The Litt­le Mer­maid tells the sto­ry of the mer­maid Ari­el, who longs to be part of the world of humans. She visits the sur­face and falls for Prince Eric, then makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursu­la to explo­re life on land fur­ther. Hal­le Bai­ley stars as Ari­el in this reim­agi­ning. Jonah Hau­er-King takes on the role of Prince Eric, Ursu­la will be play­ed by Melis­sa McCar­thy. The movie will fea­ture songs from the ori­gi­nal ani­ma­ted Dis­ney film, with the addi­ti­on of four new musi­cal num­bers. The Litt­le Mer­maid will appeal to new audi­en­ces through updated plot lines, while also brin­ging back memo­ries for tho­se who grew up watching Dis­ney films.

The Litt­le Mer­maid comes out on May 26, 2023.

8. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Har­ri­son Ford repri­ses one of his most famous roles in India­na Jones and the Dial of Desti­ny. In this high­ly anti­ci­pa­ted 5th install­ment of India­na Jones, we fol­low the archaeo­lo­gist Jones as he embarks on an adven­ture, joi­ned by his god­d­augh­ter (play­ed by Phoe­be Wal­ler-Bridge) as a tra­vel com­pa­n­ion. The film is direc­ted by renow­ned filmma­ker James Man­gold, known for movies such as Wol­veri­ne and Walk The Line.
